Carbohydrate disorders in the neonate are presented from a developmental perspective. Normal metabolic adjustments provide the basis for comparison. Each entity is presented from a clinical perspective based on a discussion of pathophysiologic and biochemical mechanisms. Specific topics are: neonatal hypoglycemia, infant of diabetic mother, transient diabetes mellitus, glycogen storage diseases, galactosemia, hereditary fructose intolerance, metabolic disorders of amino acid and fatty acid metabolism associated with hyoglycemia.
